About Chicken Cock Bourbons and Whiskeys
When Chicken Cock Whiskey Founder James A. Miller started making whiskey in Bourbon Co., Kentucky in the 1830s, bourbon wasn’t even bourbon yet. Seeing the increasing value of his liquid creation, Miller formally established Chicken Cock Whiskey (thought to be named after the rooster feathers he used to stir his drinks with) in 1856, 19 years before Jack Daniels. Following Miller’s sudden death in 1860, new owners took over the business and ran with it, distributing the brand nationwide in under a decade.
Chicken Cock hit peak prestige when it was served as the house whiskey at the Cotton Club in Harlem, one of Prohibition’s most legendary speakeasies which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Historically known as “The Famous Old Brand” and “The Whiskey in a Tin Can,” Chicken Cock was smuggled into the club in sealed cans and ceremoniously opened tableside. Frequent Cotton Club performer and patron Duke Ellington even fondly recalled the spirit in his memoir “Music is My Mistress.” After Prohibition, the brand enjoyed a resurgent bout before a tragic distillery fire just after World War II put it out of business. For the next 60 years, Chicken Cock was lost to history.
That is until 2012, when Matti Anttila, founder of Grain & Barrel Spirits, visited the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History in Bardstown, KY, where historic bottles and relics of Chicken Cock Whiskey caught his eye, and his personal dedication to the brand’s resurrection began.
For the next five years, Anttila worked to bring together a talented team from across the nation to help revive Chicken Cock Whiskey and successfully bring it into the 21st century. The success was almost immediate. Today, Chicken Cock Whiskey is the 4th fastest growing whiskey brand in the United States.
Today, Chicken Cock Whiskey’s Master Distiller Gregg Snyder oversees all parts of the whiskey-making process from bark to barrel, bourbon to bottle, and the whiskey is distilled at Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Collaborative Distilling Program facility. The brand currently has two flagship products, Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Kentucky Straight Rye, as well as a number of creative limited edition releases, like their ASCOT Double Platinum Award winning Double Oak Whiskey (a Kentucky Whiskey aged in American oak barrels twice) released earlier this year and, most recently, Red Stave, a holiday release of beautiful Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished in carefully selected J. Wilkes Petite Sirah wine barrels hailing from California.
